Way of the Mill exists to help manufacturers build CNC processes that work under pressure: repeatable, scalable, and grounded in real production logic.
I’m John Miller. I earned my mechanical engineering degree building a vertical mill in college, then joined Makino’s production machinery group where I developed turnkey systems with contractual requirements for cycle time and capability. I was trained by some of the best in the business and worked hard to earn my spot among them.
Later, I led CNC machining efforts for iPhone manufacturing at Apple, supporting global suppliers on models 6s through X. I carried responsibility for operations at massive scale, where dimensional and cosmetic standards had to be met millions of times over.
Today, I run Way of the Mill to bring that same clarity, pressure-tested process thinking, and shop-floor accountability to the people who need it most. Sometimes I cut the part. Sometimes I guide the team. Either way, I make the process work and make sure it’s built to last.
I take this work seriously. But I also believe in keeping the tone and approach grounded. This is hard work, and it deserves to be done with both precision and respect.
John is a featured columnist at Modern Machine Shop Magazine. There, he writes monthly columns responding to reader questions with advice on a wide range of technical machining topics.
